Henley Royal Regatta dress code
Henley Royal Regatta is a modern sporting event with a history steeped in tradition. Members and their guests are requested to respect this heritage when dressing for the Stewards’ Enclosure, where a polished appearance is an essential part of the occasion. Understanding how to dress for Henley Royal Regatta helps ensure you feel confident while adhering to the event’s long-standing customs.
The Stewards’ Enclosure has a formal dress code, reflecting the prestige of the event. Gentlemen are required to wear lounge suits, or jackets or blazers paired with tailored trousers, along with a tie or, if preferred, a cravat. This classic approach forms the foundation of any Henley Royal Regatta outfit for formal enclosures.
To maintain these standards, certain items are not permitted. No one will be admitted to the Stewards’ Enclosure wearing shorts, leggings, tracksuits or jeans – all of which fall outside the recommended Henley Royal Regatta dress code and detract from the traditional aesthetic of the enclosure.

FAQS: Henley Royal Regatta
Henley Royal Regatta is traditionally smart and elegant, with a strong emphasis on polished attire. While some enclosures have specific rules, smart daywear is expected throughout the event.
Men are best dressed in tailored trousers or chinos, a crisp shirt, and a blazer. A tie is optional in most areas but adds a classic Henley touch.
Jeans are generally discouraged, particularly distressed or casual styles. If worn, they should be dark, tailored, and styled smartly.
Choose smart yet practical shoes. Loafers, brogues, block heels, wedges, or elegant flats work well. Avoid trainers, flip-flops, and overly casual sandals.
Classic shades such as navy, white, cream, pastel tones, and soft patterns suit the occasion perfectly. Keep bold colours subtle and well-balanced.
Follow simple style rules such as the 3-colour rule or 70/30 balance – neutral tones as your base with a small accent colour for interest.
Henley sits between formal and smart-casual. Dressing smartly ensures you feel confident and perfectly in keeping with the event’s traditional atmosphere.
