03 Dec Menswear Stylist Nick Hems Shares His Winter Styling Secrets
Recently, we had the chance to connect with Nick Hems – a talented and approachable menswear stylist with an eye for timeless fashion and effortless charm. Nick shared his journey into the world of styling and offered invaluable tips on mastering the art of winter dressing.
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and what made you fall in love with styling?
As a shy teenager, I discovered that clothing helped me communicate a confidence I certainly didn’t feel and put me at ease with myself more. Going into the world of further education and the n work I found dressing well opened doors, started conversations, and boosted my self-esteem. Over time, I saw how dressing intentionally shaped others first impressions, built trust, and even created career and relationship opportunities.
Working in sales, I used my wardrobe as a tool—tailoring my outfits to according to my audience whether it was one person or a group. This I feel always helped me leave lasting impressions.
Seeing the transformative impact style had on my confidence and success inspired me to help others do the same. I started my styling business to empower more men to dress with purpose, increase their confidence, and most importantly create more of the opportunities they deserved from life.

2. What advice do you have for men who feel overwhelmed by fashion choices?
Learn and understand what style would suit you best. Identify people whose style you admire and take notes. Instagram or Pinterest are great places to search, find looks that resonate with you and align with your personality.
Take into account your lifestyle, how is your life split between work and leisure. Your wardrobe should reflect not just your personality your daily needs and be functional. Think about the story you want to tell people that are meeting you for the first time.
Make sure you have the basics
Look at shirts, t-shirts, knitwear, trousers/jeans and shoes. Start with a wardrobe of timeless versatile pieces. Think neutral colours (navy, grey, white, black, beige/tan and olive/khaki), these colours work well together and can create a cohesive wardrobe that’s easy to mix and match.
Focus on a good fit
A great fit always elevates your look, no matter the brand or price point. Prioritise tailoring over trends and labels.
Experiment in a shop or at home
Piece outfits together for yourself so that you have the whole outfit on together and can understand what works. Once you have built up a bit of an everyday or capsule wardrobe start to experiment bringing in new colours or styles that take your fancy.
3. Do you believe certain colours or styles can subconsciously influence confidence levels?
Absolutely, certain colour and style does subconsciously influence our confidence levels.
Colour Theory
For example, colour psychology shows us that colours affect our mood and perception. Many studies suggest wearing blue can help us convey trust and competence, while red will help you evoke power and energy.
Styles play a role in how we feel
There is some amazing research entitled “enclothed cognition” which demonstrates that wearing clothes associated with confidence, like a tailored suit can influence the way we perceive ourselves and even how others respond to us.
In practice, when men wear well-fitted, styled outfits, we feel more put-together, which naturally boosts our confidence. The way we dress doesn’t just reflect how we feel; it can actively shape it!

4. What are the key wardrobe staples every man should have for winter?
Wool Overcoat
A tailored wool coat in a neutral colour like camel, navy, or grey is timeless, versatile and will elevate any outfit, from casual to formal.
Chunky Knit Sweater/Cardigan
A well-made knit in a neutral tone adds depth, texture and warmth to your styling, looks rugged and is effortlessly stylish.
Thermal Base Layers
Practical, lightweight and effective. These can be a must in the colder months, layering under shirts or knitwear without adding bulk. Look for a V or scoop neck if you don’t want them to show up under a shirt or top.
A quality pair of boots
Depending on your style choice, think Chelsea, Brogue or a Hiking style boot. A good leather boot is durable, weather-resistant, and versatile. Brown or black always tends to work depending on your wardrobe.
Scarves, Hats, and Gloves
Accessories like cashmere or wool scarves, beanies or flat caps, and leather gloves add essential warmth but also inject personality into your look. Scarves can also be a great way to add some colour to your look.
Puffer Jacket or Down Coat
For more casual look, a high-quality insulated jacket is lightweight, functional and extremely versatile. There are now so many styles to choose from.
Wool Socks
Don’t overlook wool socks. Not only will they keep you warm, but you can buy some beautiful and interesting designs that certainly add personality to your look. Essential if you are looking at a good pair of boots too.
5. How do you add a touch of personality to a winter outfit?
I go for one statement piece. It will usually be my coat, boots, hat or a chunky cardigan or jumper. I find it easy to add some personality and have some fun with one of these items. They make me feel great when I’m out in the cold also.
6. What are some tips for transitioning outfits from outdoor to indoor settings during winter events?
Start with a Base Layer. Wear lightweight, breathable layers like a thermal undershirt or a fine-knit jumper (cashmere and merino wool are good examples). These are thermoregulating and keep you warm outdoors whist preventing overheating indoors.
Invest in a Statement Coat
Choose a stylish well-tailored overcoat. This will help you create a good first impression and it is the number one item likely to be seen.
Use Layering Pieces
Cardigans, blazers, or gilets work well as middle layers that you can wear indoors for added warmth and style.
Smart Accessories
Scarves, hats, and gloves in high-quality fabrics like wool or cashmere are practical for the cold and can also be removed easily without compromising your look.
Think about your Footwear
Wear boots that are stylish but practical for the weather, ensure they’re easy to take off if needs be and clean if transitioning to an indoor setting. Think about whether you’ll need alternative footwear depending on where you are going.
Neutral Colours
A neutral palette ensures all layers work cohesively, whether you’re indoors or outdoors.
Don’t Overdo the Layers
Avoid heavy layers under your coat if you’ll be indoors for extended periods. Instead, layer lightly and rely on your outerwear for warmth outdoors.
Pay Attention to Fit
Well-fitted layers are crucial. They should sit comfortably and not add unnecessary bulk, so you look sharp in every setting.
Bag
A leather or a high-quality material bag can help elevate a look, just like other accessories. It can also be a highly effective addition helping you carry additional items effortless or store additional layers.
